Early Voting Begins in Metro Atlanta

Several polling stations across Fulton, Gwinnett, Cobb and DeKalb counties are open today for those voters ready to cast their ballot for local, state and national offices ahead of the Nov. 4 election day. Turnout is expected to be high as the Democratic and Republican base - those oft forgotten decided voters - will likely take advantage of an opportunity to bypass longer lines less than six weeks from now.

Federal election law requires states to make ballots available to voters 45 days prior to the election. And in an age where more and more Americans are traveling for business and pleasure, the option to vote in advance of election day eliminates one possible scheduling conflict.

Georgia has seen a surge in voter registration in recent months, with as many as 100,000 new voters coming on board in August. The historic nature of this election and robust voter drives will likely bring in more first-time voters before the Oct. 6 registration deadline.
