Perestroika for the Republican Party … with Newt Gingrich?
The Republican Party is reeling a bit after being handily defeated in last week’s election. Not only did the GOP lose the presidency, but they also lost seats in both the U.S. House and Senate. Talk this week within Republican ranks has centered around finding new, young leaders, reaching out to black and hispanic voters, and expanding the brand appeal beyond the perimeters of small government, pro-life and “defense of marriage” issues.
Now, there is wind in the sails of former Georgia congressman and speaker of the house Newt Gingrich. Some say he may be vying for the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee. While Gingrich has not explicitly acknowledged his interest in the position, he has been vocal about restructuring and reshaping the GOP after the perceived failures of the Bush administration.
It may be more likely that Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele becomes chairman, but in any event, Gingrich is likely to play an important role in the Republican Party’s perestroika.
